Performance:6days(40 hour)

This work is based on interviews conducted with people who have often been mistaken for being “half” or non-Japanese.
The recorded video of one such interview is traced both by the artist herself (appearing in the video) and by an actor (performer).

In the image above, the large projection on the left shows the artist, Midori Miyamori, tracing the original footage; on the right, Kaimio Hatsushika, the performer, does the same; and on the monitor hidden behind the central projector appears the man who was originally interviewed.
One cannot choose the body one is born with.
The interviewee had often been asked things like “Are you from abroad?” or told “Your Japanese is very good.”
Yet rather than despair over such experiences, his words suggested an attempt to embrace them—as openings for communication, as part of his way of life.

For both the performer and myself, the statements spoken by the interviewee were things we would never experience firsthand while living as ourselves.
Over the course of the 40-hour performance, the actor attempts to fully inhabit the man who was interviewed.

The work explores how narratives born from unchosen bodies can be varied and rearticulated, even at the cost of losing direct subjecthood.
Speech, after all, can always be dissected into “who spoke” and “what was said.”
