Statement of the exhibition

To put oneself in another’s position, to feel pain over a distant stranger’s story;
to feel another’s happiness as if it were one’s own, or to imagine the suffering of someone whose face one has never seen—
these gestures once formed the very beginning of communication,
the instinct to search for what is shared between oneself and others.

Yet today, as individuals actively broadcast themselves online,
it seems that our differences—rather than our similarities—are what we have come to highlight, circulate, and consume.

In the works presented in this exhibition, a person speaks words that “only the original speaker should understand,”
or wears something “that once belonged to someone else.”
Through such acts, the gestures and appearances of others are transplanted onto different bodies.

Every living person leads an entirely different life.
When we try to imagine the life of someone we don’t know, using only a few clues,
we inevitably measure it against our own values.
That act may be a warm misunderstanding born of empathy—
or perhaps, a cold understanding that imposes itself on the other.

相手の立場に立って考えること、遠い誰かの話に心を痛めること。はたまた相手の幸せが自分のことのように嬉しいことや、顔も見たことのない人の苦悩に思いを馳せること。

それはコミュニケーションの中で最初に行われる、『自分と他者に共通点を見つけようとする』ということであったはずだ。

しかし、個々人がインターネットで活発に情報発信をするようになった現在、人と人との違うところばかりが多く意識され、消費されるようになったと感じる。

本展示で展示する作品の中では、”本人だからわかること”を他人が喋っていたり、”誰かが着ていたもの”を着てみたりなど、自分ではない他者の装いや振る舞いを別の身体に移植している。

生きるすべての人に全く違う人生がある。少ないヒントで知らない人の人生を想像する際に自分の価値観を物差しにすることは、きっと思いやりからくる温かい誤解であり、そして押し付けがましい冷たい理解であるかもしれない。
